Charlottesville Tomorrow names Angilee Shah Editor-in-Chief

Angilee Shah will become Charlottesville Tomorrow’s first Editor-in-Chief on December 1, 2021. 

Shah is an experienced journalist, editor, and newsroom leader who embodies the organization’s values of truth, community, and equity. She spent over a decade as a reporter and editor working in international news, then six years in public media as a founding editor of PRI’s Global Nation, The World’s U.S. immigration desk. In one year, she helped bring 50 new contributors to the program. More recently she has been helping build news media with ground-up approaches to narrative reporting, aiming to tackle the big stories with editorial processes designed for and by the people being covered.

“Angilee is the perfect newsroom leader to take Charlottesville Tomorrow into the next phase of its growth,” said Charlottesville Tomorrow Executive Director Giles Morris. “She understands that local nonprofit news organizations like ours have an opportunity to become the primary news sources in their regions, but that the opportunity relies on our ability to connect deeply with all of the audiences in our community.”

Through her recent work as a coach and consultant for local news organizations around the country, Shah brings a broad understanding of news ecosystems and the practical experience of connecting mission driven newsrooms with their communities. As a journalist and editor, her work in international, national, and local beats and her passion for giving more people power in news, have prepared her to help Charlottesville Tomorrow grow and include more of its diverse community in its editorial process.

“I’m joining this remarkable organization at a time when Charlottesville is often in the eye of national news media,” said Shah. “I am looking forward to working with this dedicated team of reporters and my neighbors to help us own our narratives and tell our stories for ourselves and the rest of the country.”

As Editor-in-Chief, Angilee will work with Managing Editor Jessie Higgins, Government Reporter Charlotte Woods, Equity Reporter Erin O’Hare, and Community Engagement Reporter Tamica Jean-Charles to elevate Charlottesville Tomorrow’s news presence and deepen connections in the community. Shah will also help to lead the Charlottesville Inclusive Media project, Charlottesville Tomorrow’s partnership with local Black media companies In My Humble Opinion Talk Show and Vinegar Hill Magazine.
