“Painting for Ukraine” was conceived by artist David Cochrane several weeks prior to and by the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. Inspired by Pablo Picasso’s famous 1937 cubist anti-war painting, “Guernica”, “Painting for Ukraine” depicts another atrocity almost 100 years later.
The painting will be unveiled during a benefit reception on May 17, 2022, beginning at 6:00 pm. The reception will be held at Vault Virginia, a membership-based workspace and social club on Charlottesville’s downtown mall. (Enter from 3rd Street). Ticket prices are $50 with net proceeds going to benefit two important charities for Ukraine: Global Giving & World Central Kitchen.
About the Artist:
David Cochrane (71), born in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, dropped out of high school and went to New York City to study art at the School of Visual Arts. He later transferred to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fines Arts in Philadelphia, the oldest art school in America, and then returned to NYC as a Whitney Fellow in 1975. Living and working in New York City in the 1980s gave David an amazing opportunity to explore various creative streams simultaneously.
As an artist, he delved into contemporary art and pursued his passion of abstract art and jazz music. He was fortunate with his art business to have collaborated with a variety of artists and personalities in the contemporary art scene.
David now lives in Batesville, Virginia, a modest little village in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This beautiful and peaceful place gives him time to pause and reflect on human nature. He continues to paint pictures, like “Painting for Ukraine,” because it is, as he says, “his antidote for tyranny.”
